Before you head out on your journey you need to make sure that you have some home based support. This is a person or people that know your hike plan in case of an emergency. If you are carrying a PLB (Personal Locating Beacon), this is probably the person who will receive the call for assistance and will be notified of an emergency.
Your home based support should have the following information:
Know where you are hiking from and too, and should have a map of the journey with emergency access points.
They should know how long you will be gone and when and how to expect communication that you are ok.
If you are journeying with a group they should have a copy of the names, emergency contact and medical information for the people in your party.
They should know how to access location information if you’re using a PLB that allows tracking.
It’s a good idea for them to have a list of the local contact information for the trail i.e. the number for the ranger, land manager, nearest hospital etc.
If you will need re-supply, this might be the person organising your food/equipment drops.
Another part of planning for emergencies is making sure you have appropriate emergency equipment for your journey. For example if you will be travelling in snake territory you might learn how to treat a snake bite and bring the appropriate first aid equipment, if you will be travelling in cold weather perhaps an emergency blanket is in order. Is your first aid kit properly equiped, do you have medication you need? Do other people in your party no you medical conditions/allergies and how to treat them, and where your medication is kept?
If you are travelling in a large group or with youth do you have an emergency management plan?
